Extended Microlight Flying by from Red Letter Days

A trip on one of these nippy, lightweight little flying machines is about as close as you can get to being a bird. It's an exhilarating experience which needs strong nerves and a head for heights! Start with a short briefing from your instructor, before hopping into your dual-controlled microlight. There are two types of microlight: 'flex wing', based on the frame of a hang glider; or 'fixed wing', which is similar to a conventional light aircraft. You'll be impressed by the speed and manoeuvrability of this little craft, and your instructor will encourage you to have a go at the controls yourself. If you get a taste for it, your flying time can count towards a microlight Private Pilot's Licence.

Availability: Operational dates vary, the Lincolnshire venue usually offers selected weekend dates and in Scotland flights operate everyday.Weather: Microlighting is a weather dependent activity and it is crucial that you call the venue for a weather check before setting out. If your flight is cancelled because of the weather, it will be re-booked for an alternative date or time.Duration: Your flight will last for around 60 minutes.Numbers On Day: Your briefing might be shared, but your flight will be held on a one-to-one basis with a qualified pilot.Spectators: Spectators are welcome to come along and watch you take off and land. A camera or a pair of binoculars will come in handy.Dress Code: Most microlights have open cockpits, so wrap up warm. Bring sunblock in summer. Sunglasses are recommended all year round.Guidelines: Your flying time can count towards a microlight Private Pilot's Licence, for which you need 15 hours of dual control and 10 hours solo flying to qualify. Please be aware that this is quite a high adrenaline experience, not for the faint hearted.Restrictions: Maximum weight is 16 stone and minimum age is 12-16 (dependant on venue).
