Microlight Flying Experience by from Red Letter Days

The planes that most of us travel in are so big you hardly even know that you're in the air. Well, things couldn't be more different flying in a microlight. In fact, a trip on one of these nippy, lightweight little flying machines is about as close as you can get to being a bird. It's an exhilarating experience - and one which needs strong nerves and a real head for heights! You'll start off with a short briefing from your instructor, before hopping into your microlight. There are two types of microlight: 'flex wing', based on the frame of a hang glider; or 'fixed wing', which is similar to a conventional light aircraft. They all have dual controls, so you're in safe hands at all times. You'll be impressed by the speed and manoeuvrability of this little craft, and your instructor will encourage you to have a go at the controls yourself (we don't reckon you'll need much encouragement). If you get a taste for it, your flying time can count towards a microlight Private Pilot's Licence.

Availability: Operational dates vary but generally each venue runs every weekend and some weekdays during the summer months and up to three dates a month (weekends and weekdays) throughout the rest of the year.Weather: Microlighting is a weather dependent activity and it is crucial that you call the venue for a weather check before setting out. If your flight is cancelled because of the weather, it will be re-booked for an alternative date or time.Duration: Your flight will last for 20 to 30 minutes.Numbers On Day: Your briefing might be shared, but your flight will be held on a one-to-one basis with a qualified pilot.Spectators: Spectators are welcome to come along and watch you take off and land. A camera or a pair of binoculars will come in handy.Dress Code: Most microlights have open cockpits, so wrap up warm. Bring sunblock in summer. Sunglasses are recommended all year round.Guidelines: Your flying time can count towards a microlight private pilot's licence, for which you need 15 hours of dual control and 10 hours solo flying to qualify. Please be aware that this is quite a high adrenaline experience, not for the faint-hearted.Restrictions: Maximum weight is 14 to 16 stone and minimum age is 10 to 16, depending on venue.
