Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a book by Roald Dahl which I loved reading as a child. I had a copy of the first film version of the book on tape. I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that it was a version that Roald Dahl had not approved of. Made in 1971, it was directed by Mel Stuart and starred Gene Wilder as the man himself Willy Wonker. When I heard about another version being made I was a bit unsure, as despite it steering away from the book slightly, I still had some attachment to the 1971 version, perhaps because I watched it when I was young and it also had some memorable songs in, such as the oompa loompa songs, which is not in the modern version.
This version is directed by Tim Burton and shows a much darker version of the legendary book. Willy Wonker runs and owns the local chocolate factory, having been closed for 15 years, a competition to win a visit to the famous factory opens, all you have to do is find one of the five golden tickets hidden in one of Wonkers world famous chocolate bars. People all across the world rampage into shops desperate to be a winner, including Charlie Bucket who manages to find a ticket himself! Along with Charlie, the other undeserving winners are Augustus Gloop, Violet Beauregarde, Veruca Salt and Mike Teavee. We watch as room by room each winner gets picked off one by one, all accept for Charlie. Johnny Depp plays a more sadistic version of Willy and we find out more about his background and obsession with confectionary.
The factory is brightly garishly coloured and the sweets and chocolates look delicious which really do the original book justice, and provide contrast to Charlie's home life. With funky songs and magical sets your children will love this DVD.
