I was a bit dubious of War of the Worlds when it first came out as it seemed yet another excuse for Hollywood to churn out yet another remake/book adaptation, that seems to fill up the cinema's these days. I hadn't seen the original film but I have read the book and heard the audio version that was played on the radio and so I was willing to give it a go and it was actually quite good.

For those who don't know the sci-fi novel, the book is by author H.G Wells and is set in Victorian England, which is invaded by robotic aliens who come up from the ground. The modern remake of War of the Worlds though, is based in the American state of New Jersey and stars Tom Cruise as the lead character Ray. Ray works in the docks and is a hard working part time dad who lives the life of a bachelor. His parenting skills are lapse and when one day he is asked by his estranged wife to look after their 2 children while she goes to visit her parents with her new partner for the weekend, he reluctantly agrees.

The visit doesn't start off too well, after an argument with his son Robbie, Robbie drives off in his dad's car. All of a sudden a freak thunderstorm occurs outside. Rachel (his younger daughter) and Ray go outside in the garden to investigate but it doesn't look like normal storm clouds in the sky and they have to quickly retreat back inside because of the frequent lightning bolts. After making sure Rachel is ok, Ray goes out into the street to see what is going on; a massive hole appears in the ground and out climbs a 200 ft tripod intent on incinerating anything that gets in its way. What are these robots? Will Ray be able to get his children to safety? You'll have to watch to find out!
