I think when 28 days later first came out I was confusing it with the film final destination and so the film didn't really appeal to me, I also didn't like the hype that was surrounding the film on its first release, so it was a few years later that I actually got round to watching it, in fact it wasn't until my friend saw it in a deal with its sequel 28 weeks later (which was out on DVD last year sometime) that I ventured into the zombie world. My friend is really into zombie films and as I don't mind a bit of blood and gore I gave it a try and it was a really brilliant film. It isn't your usual zombie film, there is an actual plot and the script is quite intelligent and portrays a very dark side of human nature.
The film is set in modern day Britain and following an accident in a science lab a highly contagious destructive virus is unleashed into the British population. It turns it's victims into flesh hungry, vicious, rage filled zombies and this epidemic quickly spreads throughout the country. However a few of the inhabitants survive and we follow their journey to safety, when they hear a faint signal calling for survivors on the radio; they take the risky decision to follow that call in the hope of rescue. The call turns out to be from a group of soldiers who have managed to find a safe house with food and water and somewhere to sleep. But is this set up all as it seems, are they truly safe from the clutches of the zombies outside, or is there a danger closer to home?
The acting is believable, the action, blood and gore aren't over the top and the music is haunting, really helping build up the tension on screen. This is a great British film.
