I have been a massive Dr Who fan since I was small and must admit that I'm not entirely convinced by the new revival of the show. It seems to be much more aimed at children, which seems like an obvious marketing ploy when you see how much merchandise is around. The doctor himself I don't really believe either, constantly gurning and adding humour where it's not necessary. Where is the drama? The violence? The inventive storylines? Surely they can't keep bringing out the daleks at every available opportunity? Maybe I just feel protective over the classics and the fact that when I was small it was a niche thing to like and I don't like the fact that it is now appealing to the masses. Which why when I heard of the new adult spin off named Torchwood (an anagram of Dr Who and it actually came from the production teams secret code word for Dr Who documents.) I was intrigued if not slightly concerned on how much better this new series, produced by the same team, would be and I was pleasantly surprised, it was actually really good!

The Torchwood team is headed by Captain Jack played by John Barrowman and they are an organisation specifically formed to deal with all things alien and out of this world, they are above the law and have access to things that even the police don't know about. A bit like Mulder and Scully, except that Captain Jack has a few more comrades including, Toshiko the technical whizz, Owen the medical man, Ianto the housekeeper and Suzie. Each episode tends to centre around a particular character, the first episode beings with our introduction to Gwen who is at first a police officer but she soon becomes embroiled in Torchwood activities and quickly becomes Torchwood's new recruit. And as the series progresses we find out more about each team member along with all the sex, aliens, blood and gore you'd expect in a more adult version of Dr who, give it a go!
