I began buying Total Guitar when it first started back in the 1990's - back then it was the ideal Guitar mag for Beginner to Intermediate level guitarists, yet it still has a lot of appeal for more advanced players. I put my guitar down for a few years because I could never find time to play. But now I've picked up my guitar again and got back into playing, I've subscribed to Total Guitar and I'm happy to report that it's even better than before.
My favourite things about Total Guitar are the fact that they show you how to play different classic and modern guitar tracks each issue in a very easy-to-follow way - and the backing tracks on the CD are always top-notch. It's great value for money, emphasised more by the fact that it's got a very good balance of content vs. ads, unlike some of the American magazines. The classifieds section is very useful and I always keep my eye out for bargains and interesting items in there.
Since subscribing to Total Guitar I've learned to play greats by all my favourite artists including Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Gary Moore, Metallica, Slipknot, Nirvana, Cream, Steve Vai, Joe Satriana, and absolutely loads more.
The gear reviews are always very impartial and well-detailed, accompanied by great looking photographs so you can really get a feel for the item. I always find that reading about new gear in a magazine gives you a different perspective than browsing through auction websites like eBay.
Overall I'd say that a subscription to Total Guitar magazine is the ideal gift for any budding guitarist that wants to improve their playing, and read about all the latest gear and news of all the goings-on in the world of Guitar. I give Total Guitar the Thumbs up!
